What Home Means to me – Priyanka Joseph

Home is more than just a physical structure; it’s a tapestry woven with memories, emotions, and experiences. It’s the place where laughter echoes, where dreams take root, and where love grows. Each of us has a unique definition of home shaped by our individual journeys. For me Home, means my Universe, a very special space I have curated.

The Essence of Home

Again, home is a sanctuary, filled with the scent of home-cooked meals and the warmth of family gatherings. It’s where milestones are celebrated—birthdays, holidays, and simple Sunday afternoons that turned into cherished traditions. Think back to those moments: the joy of your first Christmas tree, the sound of your favorite song playing on a Sunday morning, or the comfort of curling up with a good book in your favorite nook.

Home should be found in the people who surround you rather than the walls that enclose you. Perhaps it’s a group of friends who have become your chosen family, or a partner who makes every day feel like an adventure, or children who fill the space with laughter. Lots of photo walls, travel souvenirs corner & memory decks, a special space for smokers, a fabulous bar, A courtyard that screams comfort & style.

And why this space should be made special.

Every home should be personalized. Everyone’s experience is different, and a home reflects your journey. It speaks loudly about your achievements, it should talk about your scars, it should be that one place which brings you comfort no matter what happens in your life, be it happy or sad.

When I worked on renovating my home in Dubai, I had a lot of weightage given to personalized spaces. My home is my journey, and it should reflect every person who lives in there. We didn’t prefer a house that goes with trends or furniture which you can find in the mall. We wanted character, we wanted personal. In Dubai, you don’t get to build a house from foundation stage, most probably you would end up buying a space which is already made as per someone else’s ideas & creativity. All you can do is, work on an interior which can transform the outcome.

There’s something incredibly comforting about spaces—those little corners that make you feel safe and grounded. Maybe it’s the spot on the couch where you unwind after a long day, or the kitchen where you whip up your favorite recipes. These are the places where you can truly be yourself, where you can let down your guard and find peace.

And for me, to make this concept become real was challenging. I didn’t want to work on a template, I wanted my little silly ideas to become real, every designer I met, came with standard concepts and I wanted everything, I like too much, yet I wanted simple and within the budget. I’m a person who wants my house to be a lot of things, and I don’t want a specific design concept to take lead. It was even difficult for me to make people understand this, they showed me some pictures, some suitable ideas, it all looked fabulous and out of the world, but remember I like me, I like us. I don’t want perfect because we are not perfect.

Then, I identified, there is a huge space for commoners to want a simple space, that feels like home. I mean, we cannot live in a space that looks like those AI generated perfect Studio where real people don’t live. We have flaws, we have clothes, we have kids, we have pets. But for me it is also very important to stay organized and a neat looking space which feels personal, more importantly, a place that can be maintained.

I took charge, I signed up for courses from affiliated universities for Interior Design, balancing between my job, my kids & my life. I jumped very deep into the scenario; I reached a point where I know to convert a common person’s dream into reality. I made mistakes, But I learnt the best way to make a home look and feel like home. I invested on great talents & artisans, who can make my imagination come real. All this underlined, with a workable budget.

In the end, when people came to my home, they feel the warmth, they know its real, our home speaks character, our dreams, our flaws. And each time I walk in, I feel pride. I feel content. I feel I did the right decision.

And I wanted to curate the same for people with the same emotions, people who wanted to make special corners, who wanted to make imaginary things real for their kids, people who wants to feel home at home.

Then I thought, I’ll make them the House – they make it a Home.
